Many people reject identification with disability icons like the wheel chair because such icons perpetuate stereotypes of people with disabilities and are seen as stigmatizing. We aim to change this by giving individuals a positive symbol with which to identify. Our Disability Power & Pride logo is meant to be inclusive and empowering.
The ampersand or “&” symbolizes the shared identity of people with disabilities. Disability is a natural part of life, yet only one part. We have disabilities & our friends & family have disabilities. We are architects, athletes, entertainers, businesspeople, politicians, artists, engineers, parents, neighbors, friends, & we -- or our loved ones -- have disabilities. We are people with disabilities. Our disabilities do not define us, but are a meaningful part of our identity that we embrace. We our a community with power & pride.
